The figures here are published national ranges from cost guides. They aren't quotes. Use them to plan, then ask mold inspectors and remediation companies near you to look at the problem and price it.

What mold remediation costs
When you might not need a company
The EPA says that if the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet, roughly a 3 foot by 3 foot patch, you can usually handle the job yourself.9 The same page says not to run the heating or air conditioning if you know or suspect it has mold in it, since it could spread mold through the building.9
Inspection and removal by different companies
In some states the company that tests for mold can't be the one that removes it. In New York and Texas, one license holder can't do both the assessment and the remediation on the same property or project.10-11 In Florida, a company that assessed a building generally can't remediate it within the next 12 months, or the other way round.12 Which states license mold remediation has every state's rule.
Prices we don't give
- A small patch under 100 square feet as its own price. There aren't enough published figures for a full range.
- A per-square-foot figure for the whole home's floor area. One publisher multiplies a single cleaning step by the size of the home, which isn't a price for removing mold.
- Prices from named companies. One company's price isn't a national range.
What to ask before you book
- For an inspection: how many samples the price includes, and whether lab fees are extra.
- For remediation: how big the company measured the moldy area, and whether the price includes replacing drywall or other materials it removes.
- Whether the company will find and fix the moisture that caused the mold, or whether you'll need someone else for that.
- In a state that licenses mold work, the license number and type. How to check a restoration or mold company's license links each state's lookup.
Each company on this site is listed with its phone number where it has one, so you can call two or three and compare. You can also use the request form to reach mold inspectors and remediation companies near you.
